The Hollies - Concert Review
King's Lynn Corn Exchange, 9th November 2004 - by Rachel Banham "STANDING OVATION SAYS IT ALL"
It was the concert we had feared we might never see. When frontman Carl Wayne lost his battle with cancer, The Hollies' future was briefly uncertain.
New singer Peter Howarth has performed just a handful of shows with the band, but already it's clear The Hollies have found their man.
Guitarist Steve Lauri recently replaced Alan Coates too.
Yet every hit, from Sorry Suzanne to On A Carousel and Stop Stop Stop to Long Cool Woman came out fresh. All were brilliantly evocative of the original recordings, and the new members have complimented the others, including the invaluable backbone of drummer Bobby Elliott and guitarist Tony Hicks.
Flowers In The Rain (by Carl's band The Move) proved a fitting tribute to the singer.
Peter's acoustic version of Here I Go Again was wonderfully atmospheric.
Their cover of Bruce Springsteen's Sandy was equally impressive and later Ray Stiles sang Tiger Feet (by his former band Mud) encouraging some to dance.
As He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother closed the show, it was clear The Hollies future is not in doubt. The standing ovation, instantaneous and totally deserved, said it all.
