The Hollies - Concert Review

Aldershot, Princes Hall, 3rd March 2004 - by Jane Ash

Wednesday March 3rd was a memorable day for Aldershot music-lovers as it marked the return of The Hollies after an absence of an incredible 38 years.

Carl promised us two and a half hours of classic Hollies hits and one or two surprises – we were not disappointed.

A packed auditorium was treated to a non-stop Hollies hit parade – every song a classic in its own right, but presented in a fresh and vibrant style, but still retaining that unmistakable Hollies touch.

Tony Hicks is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitarists around – his craftsmanship and versatility effortlessly guiding the group from great rock and roll to tender ballads.

The audience were wildly enthusiastic and during a fine rendition of “The Air That I Breathe” a group of ladies felt unable to stay in their seats and came to front of stage to touch hands and get that little bit closer.

A stonking version of Mud’s “Tiger Feet” was well received as were some fabulous Move numbers – Carl enjoyed telling the crowd that a young fan in the front row knew all the words of the songs – the young lady in question admitted to being eight years old!

The set finished in magnificent style with a powerful performance of “He Ain’t Heavy.” Carl certainly did justice to this musical masterpiece and all the boys seemed genuinely moved by the well-deserved standing ovation given by the fans.

Don’t leave it so long next time, boys. You are guaranteed a warm Hampshire welcome next time you are in town.
